FC Winterthur may have ended its losing streak, but the 2-2 draw against FC Zurich is yet another setback in the relegation battle.
The team at the bottom of the table is seven points behind penultimate-placed GC. First of all, Winterthur must now hope that GC do not win at home against Servette on Sunday. With three more points in their account, the Grasshoppers, soon to be coached by Peter Zeidler, would no longer be able to catch up. At least in terms of motivation, the Hoppers should have a head start on Geneva on Sunday: With a win, they could not only definitely distance themselves from FCW, but also close to within five points of FCZ. Nothing is at stake for Servette.
FC Zurich squandered their victory in Winterthur in the closing stages. After Philippe Kény's penalty goal in the 69th minute, the team of Carlos Bernegger, the replacement for Marcel Koller, who will take over after the season, allowed themselves to be pushed back a long way. In the 96th minute, Winterthur's top scorer Andrin Hunziker converted a penalty to make it 2-2.
Winterthur, who showed impeccable fighting spirit, had already pulled one back in the first half. Just two minutes after Juan Perea made it 1-0, Pajtim Kasami equalized. But morale alone is not enough to stay in the Super League. Patrick Rahmen's team is too vulnerable in defense. The two goals conceded against FCZ took the total to 93, the most conceded by any team in a Super League season.
In the other match of the Relegation Group on Saturday, in which Lausanne-Sport and Luzern played for honors, the Central Swiss team won 2:1 after trailing at the break. Tyron Owusu (53rd) and Andrej Vasovic (66th) provided the turning point with their goals.
