Seoane worse than Contini Only one change of coach in the Super League has paid off so far
Four coaches have been sacked early in the current Super League season - but a look at the points average shows that their successors have often done no better: The successors often don't do any better.
No time? blue News summarizes for you
- Four coaches have already been sacked in the Super League this season - and the majority have so far failed to see the hoped-for upturn in fortunes under their successors.
- At Servette, YB and FCZ in particular, the points average of the new coaches is well below that of their predecessors.
- Winterthur is the only club to show a slight statistical improvement, but even here it remains uncertain whether the team will stay in the league.
Coach Thomas Häberli had to leave Servette at the beginning of August after the second round of the championship, even though the Lucerne native had led the team to second place the previous year. However, the unsuccessful start to the season with two defeats was reason enough for the Geneva management to replace him with Jocelyn Gourvennec.
Häberli later summarized the situation at blue Sport: "It doesn't matter if you go for a coffee with the president every week. If you lose three, four or five times, you're gone."
Häberli's overall record in Geneva across all competitions: in 48 games, there were 20 wins, 13 draws and 15 defeats, giving him a points average of 1.52.
Meanwhile, his successor Gourvennec has yet to make his mark in the league. In 17 games, there have been 5 wins, 5 draws and 7 defeats. The Frenchman has a points average of 1.18, which is clearly worse than that of Häberli. The interim result: tenth place for Servette.
Three coaches have to go in October
While September remained quiet, three coaches were dismissed in October. First, Uli Forte had to take his hat off in Winterthur. He had also enjoyed success in the previous season, but 2 points from the first nine Super League games were too meagre. Patrick Rahmen took over for him at the Schützenwiese.
In his ten league games to date, the Basel native has picked up eight points with FCW. Statistically, the bottom team has improved under Rahmen compared to the Forte era, but the team will certainly have to score even more points to stay in the league (or at least make the barrage).
FCZ: Van der Gaag better than Hediger on paper
Just three days after Forte, FC Zurich served up Mitchell van der Gaag. The Dutchman was allowed to make nine appearances in the Super League: With four wins and four defeats each and one draw, his league record is balanced (1.45). His successor Dennis Hediger - previously van der Gaag's assistant - has not been able to do better in the two months since then. In addition to three wins and three draws, there have also been five defeats - a points average of 1.09, so no positive effect so far, at least on paper, even if there is now a spirit of optimism at the club.
Statistically, the change of coach in Bern has had an even worse effect. At the end of October, Giorgio Contini had to vacate his locker - and wished his successor Gerardo Seonae good luck in the office of YB co-owner Christoph Spycher. So far, however, the long-serving Bundesliga coach has not been able to herald a turnaround. While Contini has averaged 1.64 points in the current championship, Seoane has only managed 1.22 points in nine league games.
This did not save Contini from being sacked. He admitted that the dismissal at YB "hurt a lot". He himself naturally looked for his own mistakes in the YB chapter. However, the 52-year-old came to the conclusion that the end was "not self-inflicted", but had to do with decisions that he could not directly influence.
Häberli honestly admits that there was a certain satisfaction at the lack of results following his departure from Servette: "If my successor won ten times in a row, I certainly wouldn't have been happy, that's human nature."
