Paris Saint-Germain win the Champions League for the second time in a row. The French side beat Arsenal on penalties in the final in Budapest.
Paris Saint-Germain became only the second club after Real Madrid to successfully defend their title in the Champions League, which was introduced in 1993. The French champions needed penalty luck to do so. First, Ousmane Dembélé scored a penalty in the 65th minute to make it 1-1, which held until the penalty shoot-out. Four out of five PSG players scored in the penalty shoot-out, with only Nuno Mendes failing to score. For Arsenal, Eberechi Eze and - as the last shooter - defender Gabriel missed the target.
For around an hour, the Londoners were well on the way to crowning their season, which had already brought them a long-awaited league title, by winning the Champions League for the first time. After Kai Havertz's early opening goal, Arsenal defended the 1-0 with great skill and an impressive amount of manpower around their own penalty area.
The Gunners skillfully kept PSG's attacking armada at bay. The fact that Arsenal had little possession did not matter to them for a long time. The French side were devoid of ideas. The often well-oiled combination play of Chwitscha Kwarazchelia, Ousmane Dembélé and Co. regularly faltered on the way into the dangerous area or the dribbles bounced off the Arsenal wall.
A penalty brings PSG back into the game
The match could have ended with an uneventful 1:0 for Arsenal had it not been for Kwarazchelia's pass past full-back Cristhian Mosquera after an hour. The Spaniard committed the foul in his own penalty area, which Dembélé punished with a penalty to make it 1-1. Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta's radical defensive tactics had not fully paid off.
Only then did it become clear that Arsenal could do things differently. After the Parisian equalizer, the English side sought the second goal in a similarly rustic manner as they had previously defended: with long balls and headers. In 120 minutes, it was easy to see why the new English champions are not everyone's favorite at home. Coach Mikel Arteta's team had not traveled to Budapest for the beautiful game. However, the Arsenal players were always dangerous with their crosses into the penalty area.
PSG, meanwhile, found more space to counter-attack. The lightning-quick Bradley Barcola, who came on as a substitute for Kwarazchelia, twice got away from the English side, who had adopted a more offensive approach after the equalizer. In the 78th minute, his shot rebounded off the post. It was one of the highlights of the second part of the final, which was only occasionally convincing in terms of play. The rest of the match was full of tension and ended in a penalty shoot-out for the twelfth time.
