Video highlights Real drop points against Girona and lose their lead at the top of the table

Real Madrid dominate, but in the end only manage a 1-1 draw against relegation candidates Girona, which has consequences at the top of the table.

Top striker Kylian Mbappé saved Real Madrid from an embarrassing defeat at relegation candidates FC Girona. The 26-year-old saved the Spanish record champions from a 1-1 draw with a penalty goal, but the draw meant that coach Xabi Alonso's team had to concede the lead in the table to arch-rivals FC Barcelona and slipped to second place.

In the first half, which Real clearly dominated, Mbappé had supposedly put the visitors ahead. However, after a video review, the goal in the 42nd minute was disallowed because the Frenchman had touched the ball with his hand. Shortly afterwards, Azzedine Ounahi surprisingly scored with a shot from 14 meters to give Girona a 1-0 lead.

After the break, the Whites again celebrated too early, this time Vinícius Junior was offside when he scored. After a foul on Vinícius, Mbappé then provided the long-deserved equalizer (67th minute). But that was as good as it got for Real.
