Vinicius and Mbappé score Real respond to Champions League exit with narrow home win

Real Madrid win 2:1 against relegation candidates Alavés to keep themselves alive in the title race.

Real Madrid celebrated another success in the Spanish league less than a week after their Champions League exit against FC Bayern. The Whites defeated CD Alaves 2:1 (1:0) at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. France's star striker Kylian Mbappé (30') and the Brazilian Vinícius Júnior (50') scored the goals for Real. The final goal for Alaves by Toni Martínez (90.+3) came too late.

With the win, coach Álvaro Arbeloa's side reduced the gap on leaders FC Barcelona to six points for the time being. However, coach Hansi Flick's side can extend their lead back to nine points with a win against Celta Vigo on Wednesday evening. Real were eliminated from the Champions League last Wednesday following their 4-3 defeat in the quarter-final second leg in Munich.
