The Spaniards got their European Championship campaign off to a flying start in Bern. The world champions roll over Portugal and win 5:0 thanks to four goals in the first half and one in the 93rd minute.
No captain Irene Paredes (suspended for the first game after a red card in qualifying), no regular goalkeeper Cata Coll (injured), initially no world player Aita Bonmati (surprisingly substituted ten minutes before the end after suffering from meningitis), still a lot of squabbling in the run-up to the European Championship. Spain's footballers are not letting such "trivialities" get in their way.
In their Group B opener, the world champions outclassed Portugal 5:0 in front of 29,520 spectators in Bern. Esther Gonzalez made it 1:0 after 87 seconds and 4:0 shortly before the break, with Vicky Lopez and Alexia Putellas scoring in between to make it crystal clear in the first half. It was only after that that the Spurs dropped down a gear and spared the unfortunate Portuguese side an even bigger blow. It was only in stoppage time that the 5:0 was scored.
Before kick-off, a minute's silence was held in memory of the Portuguese star striker Diogo Jota, who died together with his brother in a car accident in Spain.
In view of Spain's show of strength, first place in the group almost seemed to have been taken, making Italy's victory over Belgium all the more important. In the Tourbillon in Sion, which was practically sold out with 7544 spectators, Arianna Caruso of Bayern Munich was the only scorer in the 44th minute.
