FC Lugano was long considered the biggest candidate for the championship. But after the defeat against Servette, 7th place is suddenly closer than 1st place. Renato Steffen looks for explanations after the 2-0 defeat.
It was supposed to be FC Lugano's season. At the winter break, the Ticino side were leading the Super League, had reached the last 16 of the Conference League and were still in contention for the Cup. However, Lugano's start to the new year was a huge failure. They were eliminated from the cup competitions and things are no longer going well in the league either.
The 2-0 defeat against Servette on Saturday evening was their fifth defeat in the last eight Super League games. Under certain circumstances, the Ticino side could even slip down to 6th place this Sunday. Instead of getting closer to the big dream of winning their first league title since 1949, Mattia Croci-Torti's team must now be careful not to drop out of the Championship Group.
Renato Steffen, who had set his sights high for this year, is correspondingly disappointed. "We actually had the game under control, but we played too many crosses or made the wrong decisions. In our difficult phase, we just don't score a goal," says Steffen in an interview with blue Sport. "I just want us to win for once. No matter how."
Are we now facing a complete collapse?
Steffen knows how serious the situation is. "In just a few weeks, we could throw away the good season we've built up," he says. He continues: "We can't look at the table now, we have to make sure we win games again. We don't need to talk about other things now. The reality is that we now have to make sure we stay in the top six."
