Stanic's late goal is not enough St.Gallen draw 1-1 at Heidenheim and miss out on the knockout phase

FC St.Gallen bowed out of the Conference League with a 1-1 draw against Heidenheim. With five points from six games, the Espen miss out on a place in the knockout phase.

St.Gallen celebrated a respectable win at Bundesliga club Heidenheim, drawing 1-1, but the eastern Swiss side were nevertheless eliminated from the Conference League.

Not much has gone right for FC St.Gallen in this European campaign. And yet, in their final match of the league phase against Heidenheim on Thursday, the eastern Swiss side narrowly missed out on securing a place in the round of 16 after all.

However, the improved performance in the second half, which culminated in Jozo Stanic's equalizer (77'), was not enough to secure the coup in southern Germany. Although Enrico Maassen's team had several promising chances to turn the game completely in their favor. First of all, Stephan Ambrosius had the opening goal for FCSG on his feet, but the Ghanaian defender's shot flew over the goal from close range.

In the first half, the Bundesliga club, who ended a seven-game losing streak with the draw, had significantly more of the play and created a number of chances. But only Norman Theuerkauf was to beat Lawrence Ati-Zigi in the St. Gallen goal when he took advantage of a lot of freedom in the penalty area after half an hour.

FCSG thus ended a European campaign with one win and two draws on a rather disappointing note, although the team from eastern Switzerland were probably glad not to have to cope with the double burden.

    The starting position

FC St.Gallen will need a medium-sized football miracle in the Conference League to secure a European winter after all. After five games - three of which were against Top 8 opponents - the Espen are still in the running with four points, but would need a win in Heidenheim as well as help from other games to reach the next round.

One game before the end of the league phase, the gap to 24th place is only one point, but in addition to St.Gallen, eight other clubs from the bottom of the table are hoping to make it into the knockout phase. So a lot has to go right for Grün-Weiss today.
