Spectacular final phase St. Gallen wrest a draw from FC Basel after a late comeback

FC Basel have to settle for a 2-2 draw in St. Gallen. A mistake by Marwin Hitz is at the origin of St. Gallen's comeback.

In the final quarter of an hour, FC Basel squandered what they thought was a certain victory. Until then, the visitors had controlled the game quite easily in a sold-out stadium with over 19,000 spectators, as FCSG hardly created anything dangerous despite the high-caliber forward line with Jean-Pierre Nsame and Willem Geubbels.

In the end, it was tellingly two corner kicks that led to St. Gallen's luck and a point. The first, in the 78th minute, saw FCB keeper Marwin Hitz make an unusual and momentous mistake, from which Christian Witzig profited. At the second corner in the 87th minute, Willem Geubbels headed the ball into the net. It was the Frenchman's eighth goal of the season.

The hectic final quarter of an hour had not been on the cards. St. Gallen had been too little determined and dangerous for that. The hosts' efforts were visible. But their attacks were harmless and far less dangerous than those of FC Basel, who were closer to scoring a third goal after the 2-2 draw. The first two goals for FCB came in the 10th minute through Léo Leroy with the first opportunity and in the 71st minute when Noah Yannick deflected a half-high corner kick from Xherdan Shaqiri into his own goal.

FC Basel will have the opportunity to put the annoying points loss behind them on Wednesday. Fabio Celestini's team will then face Etoile Carouge in the Cup quarter-final away from home.
