The quarter-finals in the Europa League are complete: Stuttgart also lose the second leg against Porto and are eliminated. Bologna beat AS Roma in the Italian duel.
The preliminary decision in favor of the Breisgauers, who started with the Swiss Johan Manzambi and Bruno Ogbus, was made 3:1 by Vincenzo Grifo with the help of the visitors. The Italian's goal shortly after the break was historic in two respects: it was his 106th goal in a Freiburg shirt, replacing Nils Petersen as the club's record goalscorer.
At the same time, he took the Breisgauers into the quarter-finals of the Europa League for the first time, after they had failed to make it twice in the previous three years. SC Freiburg lost to Juventus Turin in the round of 16 in 2023 and West Ham United in 2024. Manzambi also played his part in a peaceful final phase, setting up Freiburg's fourth goal in exemplary fashion.
The evening was less successful for the other Bundesliga side in the competition. After the first leg (1:2), Stuttgart with Luca Jaquez also lost the second leg against Porto (0:2), although the Swabians dominated the game as they did a week ago.
Four more Swiss players are in the last eight: Ricardo Rodriguez (Betis Sevilla), Dan Ndoye (Nottingham Forest), Remo Freuler and Simon Sohm (both Bologna).
Freuler was on the verge of becoming the tragic figure in Bologna's 4-3 win after extra time at AS Roma. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg, the visitors were well on their way to the quarter-finals in the Italian capital thanks to their great efficiency, before Freuler missed a penalty with 20 minutes remaining at 3-1 in Bologna's favor, which sparked the Roma comeback. The 33-year-old also had the winning goal at his mercy in stoppage time. In the end, Nicolo Cambiaghi's 111th-minute goal gave the visitors and Freuler a lucky victory.
