On Tuesday, Grasshoppers will play a test match against FC Bayern Munich at the Letzigrund. How did this come about? And where can the game be seen on TV? We answer the most important questions.
On Sunday, GC played away against Servette (1:1), next weekend the 1st Cup game against Lachen/Altendorf is on the program - and in the middle of it all, the Hoppers are testing against Bayern.
How did this come about? Bayern are partners of Los Angeles FC - the club that took over GC in January 2024. Bayern and LAFC founded the joint venture "Red & Gold", which is how the connection with GC came about.
Since last year, GC has become a kind of catch basin for promising Bayern talents who have not (yet) made the leap to the pros. Last season, Bayern loanee Nestory Irankunda caused a sensation at the Hoppers, and this year Jonathan Asp Jensen and Lovro Zvonarek are set to strengthen the Zurich club on loan. The two young midfielders have already played many minutes in the first matches of the season.
Bayern and GC already tested themselves against each other a year ago. The Munich side came out on top 4:0, but apart from that, the connection between the two clubs goes back several years. GC sporting director Alain Sutter played in Munich between 1994 and 1995. And in 2007 there was an international farewell match at the Hardturm Stadium between GC and Bayern (0:0).
For Bayern, the match at the Letzigrund is the last big endurance test before things get serious. On Saturday, the German champions play cup winners Stuttgart in the Supercup. Then next week comes the Bundesliga opener with the smash hit against RB Leipzig.
Huge. The game is completely sold out. This is probably also due to the many Bayern fans in Switzerland. So significantly more spectators are expected than GC has at a normal Super League match. Last season, the average attendance at Hoppers home games was 6,878.
