In his first Bundesliga game for a good two years, Urs Fischer delivers a minor coup for Mainz. The Zurich coach leads the bottom team to a 2-2 draw at leaders and champions Bayern Munich.
It was the first time Mainz had played a championship match under their new coach, Fischer having made his debut on Thursday in a 1-1 draw away to Polish champions Lech Poznan. It didn't take much for the Swiss to make a big impression and inflict Bayern Munich's first Bundesliga defeat of the season with his new team.
After Bayern took the lead through their young star Lennart Karl, Mainz turned the game around with goals from Kacper Potulski and Lee Jae-Sung. Mainz were unable to hold on to their 2:1 lead. In the 87th minute, Harry Kane scored with a penalty that he had provoked himself.
Mainz are four points behind Heidenheim and St. Pauli, who are directly ahead of them at the bottom of the table. St. Pauli will be Mainz's last opponents before the short winter break next weekend. Bayern Munich dropped points for the second time this season, but still extended their lead at the top of the table after Leipzig lost at Fischer's former club Union Berlin on Friday.
