Switzerland face England in the European Championship quarter-finals. But who will make the starting line-up for the national team? blue Sport expert Pascal Zuberbühler has a guess and is excited about the many options.

No time? blue News summarizes for you

  • Widmer or Vargas, Ndoye or Rieder? Murat Yakin is likely to give some thought to who he names in the starting eleven ahead of the game against England.
  • blue Sport expert Pascal Zuberbühler thinks it's a "wonderful situation" that Switzerland have so many options for how they could line up against England.
  • blue News Head of Sport Michi Wegmann thinks that Murat Yakin has no more surprises in store: "He has found his 12 to 13 regular players."

Switzerland impressed in the round of 16 of the European Championship, giving defending champions Italy no chance in a 2-0 win. Regular right-back Silvan Widmer was not involved. He was replaced brilliantly by Dan Ndoye. Is the Mainz mercenary now even threatened with the bench? blue Sport expert Pascal Zuberbühler has a theory: "I think the English are very focused on the Swiss in midfield. Xhaka and Freuler want to take them out of the game. That means there could be a bit more space on the outside." It is therefore possible that Yakin will once again rely on Ndoye and leave Widmer out.

blue News head of sport Michael Wegmann adds: "That's certainly the riskier option in defense. They went for it against Italy because they didn't have the fast players on the flanks. I also wonder how Murat Yakin does it. Widmer is certainly better defensively, but Ndoye would of course bring more power up front."

A wonderful situation

Zuberbühler is delighted that there is so much to discuss about the line-up alone: "It's great that we're discussing something like this. We have so many options. And that's a huge strength. We can move so much around at the moment. It's a wonderful situation."

In previous games, Murat Yakin has repeatedly caused surprises with his displays. With Kwadwo Duah against Hungary or Xherdan Shaqiri against Scotland - both players rewarded their starting eleven nomination with goals. And most recently against Italy, the somewhat surprising Fabian Rieder also put in an outstanding performance.

What could be the next magic trick that Murat Yakin could pull out, asks presenter Manuel Rothmund: "I don't think it's the time for magic now," replies Wegmann: "He has his 12 to 13 regular players. I don't think he'll make any more huge surprises."
