Killian Mottet, of all people, scored the winning goal to give Fribourg-Gottéron an early break in the French-Swiss derby. The 34-year-old Fribourg native, once a key player as a regular scorer but with little ice time this season, deflected a shot from defenseman Dave Sutter in the 36th minute. It was the third, but decisive lead for the visitors.

Prior to that, Lausanne had twice managed to immediately respond to a deficit in their own arena, which was once again sold out with 9600 spectators. After Samuel Walser made it 1:0 in the power play, it took 102 seconds before Tim Bozon equalized in the 16th minute. There were only 23 seconds between Fribourg captain Julien Sprunger's 2:1 and Raphael Prassl's 2:2 equalizer shortly after half-time.

Lausanne did try to create top chances in the final third. Coach Geoff Ward mixed up his forward line, but to no avail. Against a well-organized and composed Gottéron, the Vaud team couldn't find a way to get in front of the opposing goal on a regular basis.

And when they did, Reto Berra was on hand. The Fribourg goalie, who let himself be duped by a harmless, slow shot from Prassl at 2:2, put in a strong performance. Thanks in part to Berra's 27 saves, Fribourg coach Lars Leuenberger was able to celebrate a win on his 50th birthday.
