Fribourg-Gottéron is one win away from reaching the semi-finals of the National League playoffs. Fribourg beat SC Bern 2-1 at home in Game 4.
Adam Reideborn has been the topic of conversation at the Bern ice hockey club from time to time. The Swedish goalie is in his second season with SCB, and the 33-year-old has usually been first choice between the posts during this time. This season too, Reideborn has enjoyed the trust of coach Jussi Tapola for the most part.
Nevertheless, discussions arose several times during Reideborn's time with the bear on his chest as to whether the Scandinavian could meet SCB's quality requirements. Game 4 of this year's playoff quarter-final series against Fribourg-Gottéron will at least not quieten the critical voices.
The Fribourg team prevailed 2:1. And at the origin of this third victory in the best-of-seven series was a double strike by the home team in the second period. First Marcus Sörensen equalized the early Bernese lead by Miro Aaltonen in the power play, then Christoph Bertschy made the Freiburg arena tremble with the second goal for Gottéron. There were only 34 minutes between these two goals, and while Reideborn was surprised by an unfortunate deflection off the skate of his defenseman Patrik Nemeth on the first one, he let Bertschy's shot pass on the catching hand side.
It was to be a momentous mistake for the Bernese. Although they had significantly more of the play in the second half, they were unable to score. Reideborn's antipode in the Fribourg goal, Reto Berra, held on to victory for Lars Leuenberger's team with some strong interventions.
Gottéron now has the chance to advance to the semi-finals on Saturday at the PostFinance Arena in Bern. SCB now needs three wins in a row to avoid the vacations.
