Martin Fuchs wins the Grand Prix of Aachen. In the saddle on Leone Jei, the 32-year-old Swiss rider prevailed ahead of US rider Laura Kraut and compatriot Steve Guerdat.
In the last four years, there had always been a German home victory in the competition, which has prize money of 1.5 million euros. This time, the locals failed in the jump-off one after the other, while two Swiss riders caused a sensation at the top. It was only the fourth Swiss victory at the prestigious competition after Paul Weier in 1973, Willi Melliger in 1983 and Markus Fuchs in 2004.
After two rounds, eleven riders made it through to the jump-off. In this, Fuchs took the lead from Guerdat on Dynamix with a time of 50.29 seconds. He then trembled with the French rider Nina Mallevaey, who was faster but had a knockdown, and with the American Laura Kraut, who was just behind his time with 52.41 seconds. The Zurich rider's victory and his prize money of half a million euros were then secured.
