Geo Mantegazza, long-time president of HC Lugano, has passed away at the age of 95. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, his former club announced.
Mantegazza, a successful entrepreneur in the real estate and tourism sectors, among others, took over the management of HC Lugano in 1978, when the club was in the NLB. With ambition and innovative visions, he revolutionized not only the club, but Swiss ice hockey as a whole. Under his presidency, the Ticino team returned to the NLA and won the first four of its seven championship titles to date (1986, 1987, 1988, 1990) under coach John Slettvoll.
Mantegazza passed the baton to Fabio Gaggini in 1991, but continued to shape the club after his retirement as president. His daughter Vicky Mantegazza, the current president, followed in her father's footsteps in 2011.
