Great success for Joel Girrbach: the Swiss golfer shines with a 3rd place at the Spanish Open in Madrid and once again secures his tour card for the DP World Tour, the highest division in Europe.
Girrbach was still leading the classification after half of the final round. In the end, he was just one stroke short of a play-off for victory with the eventual English winner Marco Penge and his compatriot Daniel Brown. Only André Bossert has ever achieved a Swiss victory on the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) in Cannes in 1995. The 3rd place is also Girrbach's most valuable result of his career to date.
Girrbach now has the chance to qualify for the play-offs for the best 70 players of the season. Thanks to his 3rd place in Madrid, the 32-year-old from Thurgau has jumped from 109th to 60th in the rankings. Two tournaments in Asia (New Delhi and Cheonan) are still to come before the play-offs. After that, the top 50 in the annual ranking will qualify for the DP World Tour Championships, the season finale for the best.
