A major setback for the Swiss national team: after the opening win against Finland, the second game of the Euro Hockey Tour in Tampere was lost 3:8 against Sweden.
Defensively in particular, the Swiss were unable to build on their strong performance against the hosts on Thursday. In the middle third, they conceded four goals from 2:2 to 2:6 within 13 minutes. Patrick Fischer's team will conclude their campaign on Sunday against the Czech Republic.
"We'll be better than we were against Finland at the start," Fischer had hoped. But exactly the opposite happened. In the first period, the Swiss paid a high price for two penalties, which Jacob de la Rose and Fredrik Olofsson capitalized on with ice-cold precision. This meant that the 1:0 was squandered again with Sven Jung's first international goal with a fluttering shot.
Sandro Schmid was also efficient in the power play at the start of the middle third, but the Swiss then completely lost the thread. It was far too easy to lose the puck in the build-up, there was too little coordination in their own third and too many duels were lost. Between the 27th and 40th minutes, Linus Johansson, Erik Brännström, Isac Hedqvist and Jesper Fröden scored to give the Swedes a 6:2 lead, while goalie Sandro Aeschlimann was also caught up in the uncertainty of his teammates when he conceded the fourth goal.
The Swedes then clearly took their foot off the gas pedal in the final third without really getting into trouble. With more than six minutes remaining, Fischer risked everything and took the goalie off the ice, which Simon Knak promptly took advantage of to make it 3:6. A few minutes later, the four-goal deficit was restored after Fröden's shot into the empty net. In the second-to-last minute, Simon Ryfors made sure of the tough final result. Five of the eight Swedish goals were scored by players from the National League.
And so it remains the same: the Swiss also failed to win their first two games in their fourth participation in the Euro Hockey Tour.
