The 40th Federal Hornussen Festival came to an end on Sunday in the Bernese Emmental. Up to 15,000 people made the pilgrimage to the village of Höchstetten BE with its 300 inhabitants over the past two weekends.
More than 5,000 hornussen players competed in various strength classes over a total of six days of competition. The festival grounds were the size of 66 football pitches. The organizers were lucky with the weather; the last day of the competition on Sunday also took place under a bright blue sky.
Much to the displeasure of the organizers, it looked for a long time as if the anniversary edition of the Swiss Confederation would have to do without representation from the national government. According to the organizing committee, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Viola Amherd, had cancelled in June. Federal Councillor Albert Rösti stepped into the breach at short notice.
Hornussen is a part of Switzerland, said Rösti during his visit to Höchstetten last Sunday. That's why a Federal Councillor is part of it. The organizers reported that Rösti introduced himself to them as "Berti", as is customary in hornussen circles, and immediately became the center of attention with his uncomplicated manner.
The Federal Hornussen Festival takes place every three years. However, the 2021 edition fell victim to the Covid-19 pandemic. The federal festival in Höchstetten was therefore the first since Walkringen BE in 2018.
