Swiss wheelchair athletes Marcel Hug and Catherine Debrunner triumph at the London Marathon.
Six days after his victory in Boston, Marcel Hug also won one of his favorite races on Sunday. In 1:25:25, the runner from eastern Switzerland finished 44 seconds ahead of Japan's Tomoki Suzuki. He celebrated his eighth victory in the English capital, his fifth in a row.
Catherine Debrunner crossed the finish line in London as the winner for the third time. She outpaced the US American Susannah Scaroni by an impressive 3:50 minutes and took revenge for her defeat in Boston. Her time of 1:34:18 was just two seconds faster than the world record she set in Berlin two years ago. Debrunner would also have finished in the top ten in the men's race.
Assefa's world record
The Kenyan Sabastian Sawe won the men's race of the traditional London Marathon. He ran the 42.195 kilometers in 2:02:27 hours on Sunday, celebrating the greatest success of his career. The women's race was won by Olympic silver medallist Tigst Assefa from Ethiopia with a time of 2:15:50 hours. She thus set a world record for women-only races.
