Hug came close to his own world record in his latest success, his eighth in eight appearances in competitions over the 42.195 kilometers this year. He missed the record by just four seconds. He crossed the finish line around four minutes ahead of second-placed Luo Xingchuan from China.

Hug won in Oita for the twelfth time, Manuela Schär dominated for the fifth time. The Lucerne native distanced her first pursuers, compatriot Patricia Eachus and Japan's Nakamine Tsubasa, by more than six minutes. Last year's winner Catherine Debrunner did not take part in the race.
