Hungary beat Scotland 1-0 thanks to a goal well into stoppage time and kept alive their chances of qualifying for the round of 16.

The starting position was actually promising, as both teams needed a win to keep their chances of reaching the round of 16 alive. However, what was on show for long stretches of the game was not very encouraging. It was only in the final minutes that the game picked up pace and a goal was actually scored in the 100th minute. Kevin Csoboth, who had failed to hit the post eight minutes earlier, was responsible after a counter-attack.

Although the Scots had 59 percent more possession than the Eastern Europeans, they made almost nothing of it. They managed just one shot on goal from Hungarian keeper Peter Gulacsi. This was despite the fact that the Scots had a golden opportunity to get through the preliminary round for the first time ever at a World Cup or European Championship finals.

The Hungarians also showed too little overall. In the 68th minute, there was another unpleasant scene. Hungarian striker Barnabas Varga collided with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn and came to a standstill. The shock was written all over the fans' faces. After minutes of treatment behind a screen, he was carried off on a stretcher.

All-clear for Varga

On Monday night, the Hungarian association gave the all-clear. Varga was in a stable condition and in a hospital in Stuttgart. The 29-year-old suffered a concussion and several fractures to his face and will most likely require surgery. The European Championship will be over for Varga even if his team makes it to the round of 16.
