Jan Christen wins the second stage of the Tour of the Algarve.
This means that the rider from Aargau is also the leader after the opening stage on Wednesday was not counted due to a signposting error on the last kilometer.
The Swiss rider came out on top on the summit of the Alto da Foia. The 20-year-old won the mountain finish - 8.5 km with an average gradient of five percent - ahead of Joao Almeida and the Belgian Laurens De Plus. Both Christen and Almeida ride for Team UAE Emirates, whose leader Tadej Pogacar is currently keeping the competition at bay at the UAE Tour in the United Arab Emirates.
Christen also defeated Jonas Vingegaard, the two-time winner of the Tour de France, on Thursday in the south of Portugal. The Dane finished sixth, ten seconds behind. The Swiss professional cyclist celebrated his second win of the season, having been the fastest in the Trofeo Calvia one-day race on Mallorca at the end of January.
Fourth win of the season for Pidcock
Britain's Tom Pidcock, who has been under contract with the Swiss team Q36.5 since this season, won the second stage of the Tour of Andalusia in Torredelcampo, where Frenchman Pavel Sivakov took the leader's jersey from Belgian Maxim Van Gils.
Pidcock and Sivakov were part of a five-man breakaway group that formed around 50 km before the finish. The two-time Olympic mountain bike champion prevailed in a mountain sprint ahead of the Colombian Brandon Rivera and Sivakov. The Briton celebrated his fourth win of the season in Spain after two stages and overall victory in the Alula Tour at the end of January.
