Another Swiss golfer achieves an exploit at the Omega European Masters. Joel Girrbach finishes the tournament in 7th place with 17 strokes under par.
Joel Girrbach follows Cédric Gugler from Basel, who sensationally finished fourth in Crans-Montana a year ago.
Girrbach, the only Swiss permanent starter on the DP World Tour (formerly European Tour), remained at the top of the leaderboard on all four days. Thanks to the home advantage, he played all four rounds together with richly decorated players. Girrbach: "It was a mega week. Playing together with such good players and then also performing is cool."
Thousands of spectators also pushed Joel Girrbach to his most significant personal result on the tour: "On the last three holes, it was like being in a football stadium," says Girrbach.
Girrbach can make good use of the top result in Crans. The 32-year-old from Thurgau has moved up 38 places in the annual rankings to 85th position. 448.28 points, which Girrbach now has in total, were enough to earn him a tour card for this year. "This result is of course a great relief. I wouldn't say it's enough to secure the tour card yet. But it's a big step in the right direction. And there are still more big tournaments to come where I want to confirm this week."
