In the final climb, Vingegaard showed why he is the big favorite for the overall victory. The Dane pulled away a good ten kilometers before the finish in the Valdezcaray ski station and distanced himself from the competition. Thomas Pidcock and João Almeida were the first chasers, both losing 24 seconds to the two-time Tour de France winner. The overall leader Torstein Träen saved 37 seconds from his original lead of over two and a half minutes.

"I felt totally great. I'm super happy," said Vingegaard after his demonstration of power. The red jersey was not yet his goal. "It was just about winning the stage and gaining some time on my opponents." Almeida is now third overall, 1:15 minutes behind.

After the rest day on Monday in Pamplona, the race continues on Tuesday with the tenth stage. At the end of the 175.3 kilometers, the climb to El Ferrial Larra Belagua, a first category mountain, awaits.
