The American Josh Hoey broke the world record in the 800 m indoor race with a time of 1:42.50 minutes in Boston, Massachusetts, on Saturday.
The 26-year-old, winner of last summer's Athletissima, beat the historic record of 1:42.67 set by Wilson Kipketer of Denmark in Paris in 1997. Perfectly guided by a pacemaker and supported by the light signal of the "Wavelight" at the edge of the track, Hoey never gave in and obliterated the 29-year-old record.
The 2025 world indoor 800m champion is thus relaunching his career after missing the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo because he failed the trials.
