The mishap occurred during a training camp in Japan. Stump also suffered a torn medial meniscus in the same knee. On his return to Switzerland, the 28-year-old from Zurich underwent the necessary operation at the Muttenzer Rennbahnklinik on Monday.

Stump, who won the World Championship title in Doha in the 73 kg category, will have to reckon with a forced break of around nine months. Nevertheless, his chances of taking part in his third Olympic Games are intact. Although the qualification phase begins this year, it will still last a good year and a half.

Following a shoulder injury at the end of 2023, Stump is facing his second major injury in just over two years. The bronze medal at the World Championships the year before last and the two Grand Slam tournament victories last year prove that the Uster native knows how to fight his way back.
