Swiss medal hopeful Kimmy Repond is not on course for the podium at the World Figure Skating Championships in Boston. The 18-year-old from Basel is in 10th place after the short program.
To the music "Mother Nature" by Hans Zimmer, Kimmy Repond conjured up a passionate performance on the ice without any major mistakes, which was awarded 67.42 points. Repond's reaction suggested that she had hoped for more.
The 2023 European Championship bronze medallist is just six points off the podium ahead of the decisive free skate on Saturday night. At the European Championships in January, she narrowly missed out on a medal in fourth place after two falls.
After finishing 8th (2023) and 5th (2024) at the World Championships, Repond reckoned she had a good chance of achieving another top 8 result. This would qualify her for the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan.
Livia Kaiser, the second Swiss athlete, had not traveled to the World Championships with such high expectations after having to miss the European Championships due to a calf injury. With 53.68 points, the 20-year-old from Thurgau just managed to qualify for the freestyle competition for the top 24 in 23rd place. A year ago, Kaiser surprised everyone with 9th place at her World Championships debut.
In the lead with 74.58 points is local skater Alysa Liu, who made her comeback in March 2024 at the age of just 19. Japan's Kaori Sakamoto, the world champion for the last three years, had to settle for 5th place after a wobble. However, the gap to Liu is less than four points.
Lukas Britschgi will be competing in the men's short program on Thursday. The European champion from Schaffhausen is not expecting a top result after his preparation was affected by a fall at Art on Ice.
