Kimmy Repond has a disappointment to digest. The young skater from Basel misses out on the medal she was aiming for at the European Championships in Estonia's capital Tallinn. She has to settle for 4th place.
It would have been all set for Kimmy Repond. After the short program, she was in third place, just 31 hundredths of a point behind the leading Georgian Anastasia Gubanova, with Estonia's Nina Petrokina in second place, 5 hundredths behind. With 68.68 points, the Swiss skater had improved her personal best by almost one point.
However, Kimmy Repond then made two serious mistakes in the free skate, falling in both the triple lutz and the triple flip. She was just five points short of winning a medal, her second at a European Championships after bronze two years ago in Espoo, Finland.
The title went to Nina Petrokina, who was making her debut in front of a home crowd. She is the first Estonian to win a medal at a continental competition. Silver went to Anastasia Gubanova, European champion the year before last and runner-up to Loena Hendrickx twelve months ago. The Belgian had to forgo defending her title due to an ankle injury. Bronze went to Hendrickx's compatriot Nina Pinzarrone.
