Kimmy Repond from Basel fails to make it into the top ten at the World Figure Skating Championships in Boston. With 12th place, however, she secures a second Olympic quota place for the Swiss.

Kimmy Repond recovered after a horror start to the free skate, but an improvement on 10th place after the short program was not possible after two falls in the first two jumps. To the music of the film "Gladiator", the 2023 European Championship bronze medallist only managed 15th place in the free skate with 115.91 points (183.33 overall), which was enough for 12th place in the final ranking. Her personal record in a free skate is 133.38 points.

Disappointed and proud

"Of course I'm a bit disappointed because of my mistakes at the beginning," said Repond. "That threw me off track a bit. But I'm very proud that I kept fighting. I'm relieved to be in 12th place and to have got both places (for Switzerland) for next year's Olympic Games," the 18-year-old from Basel also found positives.

The second Swiss skater, Livia Kaiser, remained in 23rd place in the free skating. A year ago in Montreal, the skater from eastern Switzerland had finished ninth. Now, as expected, it was no longer possible for the 20-year-old after suffering a calf injury in preparation.

Fairytale comeback from Liu

19-year-old Alysa Liu was crowned world champion in front of her home crowd, beating three-time title holder Kaori Sakamoto. The American, who led after the short program and glittered in her golden tunic, put on a dazzling free skate and left three-time title holder Kaori Sakamoto from Japan behind.

Liu had retired in 2022 at the age of just 16, just a few months after finishing 7th at the Beijing Olympics. At the start of the season, however, she decided to lace up her skates again. Her previous best result at the World Championships was a bronze medal in 2022.
