Kirsty Coventry will be the first woman to preside over the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The 41-year-old sports minister from Zimbabwe was elected at the 144th IOC Session as the successor to Thomas Bach of Germany, who is stepping down after twelve years.
The 2004 and 2008 Olympic swimming champion was Bach's protégé and preferred successor. She surprisingly prevailed over her six competitors in the first round of voting.
