Kriens-Lucerne has reached the last 16 of the European League. The team from central Switzerland lost 31:32 to Montpellier on the last matchday of the main round, but still progressed.
Kriens-Lucerne did not manage to qualify for the knockout round under their own steam, but were still able to celebrate in the end. As their direct rivals Granollers narrowly lost by the same scoreline a little later in Denmark at Gudme, the Swiss team will advance to the round of 16 on March 25 and April 1 in third place.
Kriens-Lucerne were always trailing against the superior group winners Montpellier, who qualified directly for the quarter-finals, after the 1:1, but showed morale. Despite trailing by as many as seven goals, they almost came close again at the end.
The Serbian Milos Orbovic and the 19-year-old Swiss Luca Sigrist were the most successful for the home team.
