The eight-time orienteering world champion Matthias Kyburz finished the marathon in Paris in 2:08:37 hours as the fifth best European in 13th place.
At the halfway point of the race (1:03:16), the 36-year-old from Fricktal was still part of the 18-strong leading group. From kilometer 25 onwards, he was no longer able to keep up the pace. Kyburz made up a few more places on the final section. He lost 3:19 minutes to the Italian winner Yeman Crippa (2:05:18) after 42.195 kilometers and almost 260 meters of altitude.
Kyburz was competing in his fifth marathon, his third in Paris. On his debut in the French capital, he crossed the finish line in seventh place after 2:07:44 hours. His personal best time, set in Seville in 2025, is 2:06:48. Most recently, he shone in fourth place at the New York City Marathon.
In Paris, Kyburz confirmed the limit for the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham in mid-August. The course in England on August 16 includes around 700 meters of elevation gain. So other qualities will be required.
