Ledecky seventh - McIntosh's dream shattered

The predicted duel for gold with the soon-to-be 19-year-old Canadian Summer McIntosh even turned into a thrilling three-way battle. While McIntosh (8:07.29) could not quite keep up with Ledecky in the last 50 m and had to settle for bronze, Australian Lani Pallister (8:05.98) came within 36 hundredths of the 28-year-old American in the final stretch. Previously, only Ledecky and McIntosh had stayed under the 8 minutes and 10 seconds mark in the 800 m crawl on the long course.

While Ledecky celebrated her second world championship title in Singapore after the 1500 m crawl, McIntosh's dream of becoming the first woman to win gold in five individual disciplines at a world championship was shattered. She had previously triumphed in the 400 m crawl (where Ledecky came third), 200 m medley and 200 m dolphin. The 400 m medley is scheduled for the final day.
