The 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles will kick off with an unconventional competition calendar, with the 100m finals taking place on the first two days.
The swimming competitions, which usually take place in the first week of the competition, will be moved to the second week. The main reason for this is that the swimming competitions will be held at SoFi Stadium - the football stadium of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers - which is also part of the opening ceremony.
"We want to start the Games with a bang and give the fastest women in the world a stage," said Shana Ferguson, who is responsible for the competition schedule for the Olympic Games in three years' time. The fact that the best female sprinters will therefore be competing in three races on the first day - the heats, intermediate heats and the final - is not a problem and is not unusual at other international competitions.
Athletics over two weeks
For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, the athletics competitions will take place over the entire two weeks from July 15 to 30, 2028, with the stadium events taking place first before the last three days are dedicated to the road events.
Most of the medal decisions will be made on the penultimate day of competition - there will be 26 finals in 23 sports. These include 15 gold and bronze medal matches in team sports and 15 decisions in individual competitions. The Olympic champions on July 29, 2028 will include basketball, volleyball, beach volleyball, golf, field hockey, table tennis and football.
No dynamic pricing model
Fans will be able to register for tickets as early as January 2026 and tickets will go on sale in the spring. In contrast to the FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada, there will be no so-called dynamic pricing model at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
"Ticket pricing is certainly an issue that we are concerned and worried about," said Ferguson. "The prices are fixed, we will not have a dynamic pricing model. We understand that people are concerned about the secondary market for tickets." More details on ticket prices will be provided at a later date.
