After a long career with the HCD, Marc Wieser ended his active career in the spring. Now he can experience the Spengler Cup in a completely different way.
On New Year's Eve 2023, Marc Wieser will triumph with HC Davos at the Spengler Cup after all, his eleventh participation and on the 100th anniversary of the traditional tournament. He is relieved about this, as it would have saddened him not to be able to lift this trophy despite his long time with the record champions. On November 15, 2005, he made his debut with HCD against the ZSC Lions in the then NLA and, with the exception of three seasons with Biel (2011 to 2014), always remained loyal to the club. It was during his first year with Biel that Davos won the Spengler Cup for the last time.
In 2024, the hosts were defeated in the semi-final by eventual winners Fribourg-Gottéron (2:4). Marc Wieser's great career came to an end in the spring - after 1007 games in the top Swiss league and four championship titles with the HCD (2007, 2009, 2011 and 2015). He was also part of the Swiss World Championship team in 2016 and only made his national team debut at the age of 28.
Wanted something new
Although Marc Wieser now goes to watch Davos home games every now and then and occasionally has a coffee with former teammates, he is happy to no longer be on the ice as a professional, even if he does miss the emotions he experienced in ice hockey. "I was in that bubble for 20 years and wanted to get out of it," he says in an interview with the Keystone-SDA news agency.
Marc Wieser once thought of becoming a coach. But he changed his mind when he saw how often his brother Dino was away. Dino Wieser suffered a concussion on December 3, 2019, from which he did not recover sufficiently to continue playing. After first having to take a break from ice hockey, he joined HCD in the 2022/23 season as an assistant coach for the U17 team - in the upcoming season, he will be Johan Lundskog's assistant at the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers.
Being away so often, "that wouldn't have been right for me and our family." The 38-year-old is married to Ursina, the sister of current Kloten center Reto Schäppi. The two have three daughters. So Marc Wieser looked for something else and found what he was looking for: He is now employed by Helvetia as a customer advisor. "It's something completely new, but that's what I wanted," he says, although he appreciates that it's not a run-of-the-mill job. "If I organize myself well, I can actually come and go as I please. That's what I was looking for."
However, Marc Wieser can imagine stepping in as a temporary coach at Davos. He has made the offer to Michel Riesen, who works as a development coach for the HCD youngsters. However, this will be at a later date, as he is still completing his training. He can take a lot from ice hockey for the job: "What helps me is that I know how to fit into a team and how to deal with criticism and setbacks."
Focus not just on games
But first of all, he is looking forward to the Spengler Cup. "Now I can finally experience all the hype surrounding it," says Marc Wieser. "I'll be out and about with the kids so that they can see the whole thing with me." What makes this tournament so fascinating for him? "The fact that fans with jerseys from all over the world are walking around. The ice hockey community comes together and has fun together. That's fascinating."
It's also different for the teams than in the championship; the focus is not just on the games, Wieser continues. The tournament is a great experience for the teams and promotes team spirit. In the past in particular, it was also quite a tradition to go out.
However, Wieser emphasizes that the Davos team cannot afford to save energy and focus on the championship. "The tournament is too important for the club. If the Spengler Cup no longer exists, then HCD will no longer exist in this form."
