Swiss wheelchair athlete Marcel Hug wins the Boston Marathon for the ninth time. Catherine Debrunner also makes it onto the women's podium in second place
Marcel Hug continues to be in a class of his own over the marathon distance. The 40-year-old from Thurgau took his fourth consecutive victory in Boston over the 42.195 kilometers in 1:16:06 hours, just 33 seconds faster than the course record he set two years ago. The seven-time Paralympic champion distanced the second-placed American Daniel Romanchuk by over six and a half minutes.
In the women's race, Catherine Debrunner was only beaten by Great Britain's Eden Rainbow-Cooper. Manuela Schär narrowly missed out on the podium in fourth place.
Kenyan Korir with course record
Among the marathon runners, Kenyan John Korir repeated his victory from the previous year. In 2:01:52 hours, he set a course record at the 130th edition of the Boston Marathon, which was rewarded with a bonus of 50,000 dollars in addition to the usual prize money of 150,000 dollars. Korir beat the 15-year-old record of his compatriot Geoffrey Mutai by over a minute.
Last year's winner, Sharon Lokedi, also came out on top in the women's race, ensuring a Kenyan double victory.
