Another heavy blow for Marlen Reusser. Following her withdrawal from the Olympic Games in Paris, the health-stricken athlete from Bern has also been forced to withdraw from the home World Championships in Zurich.
Following various upper respiratory tract infections this spring and a serious crash at the Tour of Flanders, in which Reusser suffered fractures to her jaw, ear canal and teeth, the 32-year-old from Hindelbank is still suffering from post-Covid syndrome, as her management announced on Tuesday.
The health problems made it impossible for Reusser to take part in the Olympic Games in Paris, and her impairment means that competitive sport is still out of the question. The home World Championships in Zurich in a month's time will also come too soon for the 2021 Olympic time trial silver medallist in Tokyo.
"It hurts my heart that I also have to cancel the World Championships. It's really bitter. I would have loved to experience this event in my own country," the three-time European time trial champion was quoted as saying in a communiqué. Defending her title at the European Championships in mid-September is also out of the question.
