Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and Kenny Bednarek win the 100 m at the US Championships in Eugene (Oregon). Tickets for the World Championships in Tokyo in September are awarded at the trials.
The 24-year-old Melissa Jefferson-Wooden came out on top in 10.65 seconds. She improved her own annual world best from the beginning of June by nine hundredths. Jefferson-Wooden, who won Olympic bronze in Paris a year ago, is now the fifth-fastest 100m runner of all time. She has not been beaten so far this season.
Sha'Carri Richardson did not compete in the semi-finals in Eugene. However, as the reigning world champion, she is still allowed to take part in the world championships in Japan in September.
In the men's event, Kenny Bednarek (26), Jefferson-Wooden's training partner in Florida, was also the favorite to win. Bednarek, a two-time Olympic silver medalist in the 200m, pushed his personal best to 9.79 seconds, which is the fastest time this season by Jamaican Kishane Thompson (9.75). Bednarek was followed by Courtney Lindsey (9.82) and T'Mars McCallum (9.83). This trio plus world champion Noah Lyles (withdrew from the semi-finals) will represent the USA at the World Championships.
Athing Mu-Nikolayev missed out on qualifying for the World Championships in Tokyo. She was eliminated in the 800 m in the preliminary heats. Mu-Nikolayev was one of the stars of the Summer Olympics in Tokyo four years ago at the age of 19, winning two gold medals (800 m and 4x400 m relay).
