Cycling legend Eddy Merckx (79) sees Tadej Pogacar as his successor. "It's obvious that he is now above me," the Belgian told the French sports newspaper "L'Équipe".
He had already thought during the Tour de France that the Slovenian would dethrone him. "But from now on there are no more doubts," said Merckx. "Of course you can never compare the times, but we are dealing with an incredible rider here. What he did on Sunday in Zurich is unimaginable."
Pogacar attacked 100 km before the finish in the 273.9 km long world championship race and was 34 seconds ahead of the Australian Ben O'Connor at the end of his demonstration of power. Pogacar was "a huge champion" who was "out of the ordinary", emphasized Merckx.
