Mujinga Kambundji fails to get the outdoor season off to a good start. At the start of the Diamond League in Xiamen, the athlete from Bern runs to 9th place in the 200 m in 23.51 seconds.

Around a month after becoming world indoor champion for the second time in her career in Nanjing, her return to China was disappointing. After a good start, the 32-year-old sprinter ran out of steam on the home straight. The winner was Anavia Battle. The woman from the USA was stopped in 22.41 seconds in a light tailwind.

The result need not worry. A year ago, Mujinga Kambundji opened the season in China at the end of April in 23.39 seconds, becoming European 200m champion in Rome just two months later and reaching the Olympic 100m final in August. This year, the World Championships in Tokyo are not until September.

All eyes were on Shericka Jackson in the 200 m race in Xiamen. She was supposed to be the sprint queen at the Olympic Games in Paris last summer. However, the 31-year-old suffered a calf injury in July and has not made an appearance since.

Shericka Jackson finished second on her return in 22.79 seconds. In her showpiece year of 2023, the Jamaican had come within seven hundredths of Florence Griffith-Joyner's world record of 21.41 seconds at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul (21.34). So, like Mujinga Kambundji, she has plenty of room for improvement.
