The New Jersey Devils away at the Edmonton Oilers and the Los Angeles Kings at home against the New York Rangers celebrate important victories. Both teams are fighting for playoff spots.

The Swiss in New Jersey only played supporting roles this time: no goals or assists and no penalty minutes either. Timo Meier was on the ice when the goal was scored. The 24-year-old Russian Arseni Grizjuk with a goal and an assist each and goalie Jake Allen with 19 saves led the Devils to victory at the playoff finalists of the last two years. The Devils have won four of their last five games, closing the gap on the playoff spots to four points.

Things are looking a little better for the Los Angeles Kings. Kevin Fiala with the goal to make it 2:1 and an assist on Andrei Kusmenko's game-winner as well as goalie Anton Forsberg (34 saves) led the L.A. Kings to a 4:3 home win over the New York Rangers. Fiala and Forsberg were honored as the best players.

Fiala's team had previously lost four times and had only won five times since the beginning of December. The home win over the Rangers at least lifted them back up to the last playoff spot.

Setback for Josi and Nashville

The Nashville Predators suffered a setback in this respect. Captain Roman Josi's team suffered a 3:5 home defeat against the in-form Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo led 4-0 after just 24 minutes; 19-year-old Finn Konsta Helenius scored the first three points (1 goal, 2 assists) in his second NHL game. Josi was on the ice for almost 30 minutes in his 999th NHL game.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have no playoff worries with defenseman Janis Moser. Tampa Bay scored for the 14th time in a row in a 4-1 home win over the San Jose Sharks and now leads the East standings.
