While both Paul Cotter and Jesper Bratt were successful for New Jersey in the shootout, Bryan Rust and Sidney Crosby failed to score for the visitors. In regulation time, the strong Devils goalie Jake Allen, who was named the best player of the game, was only beaten by Ryan Graves to make it 1:1 (33').

Arseni Grizjuk scored for the hosts 48 seconds before the first intermission. Siegenthaler was on the ice for this goal, but remained scoreless, as did Meier and Hischier. The latter was hit in the face by a puck in the final period, but was later able to continue playing.
