The New Zealand rugby players win Olympic gold, just like three years ago in Tokyo. In the final at the Stade de France, they beat an astonishing Canada 19:12.
The Canadians had surprisingly prevailed in the knockout round, first against hosts France and then against Australia, the 2016 Olympic champions. In each case, they overturned a deficit in the second of the seven-minute halves.
Canada went into the second half with a 12:7 lead against New Zealand. Michaela Blyde and Stacey Waaka scored the goals to turn New Zealand's fortunes around. Both players had already played in Tokyo. Waaka has now won two Olympic titles with the "Sevens" as well as two World Cup titles in 15s rugby.
Bronze went to the USA, who won the match for third place against the Australians 14:12. The decision was made 30 seconds before the end by an American try over 80 meters.
