Two days after the 5:4 victory after penalties against Finland, the Swiss national team loses its second game in Ängelholm as part of the Euro Hockey Tour. It was defeated 0:3 by Sweden.
On the Thursday before last, the Swiss lost 8-1 to Sweden. This time, the defensive performance was largely good, and coach Jan Cadieux's team was particularly convincing in the box play. They did not concede a goal for 7:57 minutes, 55 seconds of which they were double shorthanded.
However, they lacked penetration, determination and the necessary precision up front. The Swiss did get into good finishing positions a few times, but were unable to beat Swedish keeper Magnus Hellberg. For the hosts, Albert Johansson, who had played for the Detroit Red Wings, did better with two goals. On the second, a shot from behind the goal line, he benefited from Reto Berra's blocker deflecting the puck into his own net. Shortly afterwards, Fribourg's keeper prevented the 0:3 with a big save, which was then scored 19.7 seconds before the end by Gottéron striker Jacob de la Rose, who scored into the empty net. It was the fifth defeat in a row for the Swiss against the Swedes.
In their last game before the home World Championship, they will face the Czech Republic on Sunday at 12.00 noon, having beaten them 1-0 on penalties a week earlier. Another win would be important for a good feeling before things get serious for the first time on Friday against defending champions USA in a rematch of last year's World Championship final in Zurich.
