The Winnipeg Jets are coming off a laborious 2-1 overtime win against the San Jose Sharks in the NHL. The team with Nino Niederreiter extends the franchise record to ten wins in a row.
The starting position could not have been clearer. Here the Jets, number 2 in the current championship, there the Sharks, the weakest of all 32 teams in terms of points. Added to this was the home advantage for the team from Winnipeg, who had already won the first two games against their opponents from California in this regular season.
But things were to turn out very differently. The Swede William Eklund gave the Sharks the lead after 15 minutes in the first period, which the visitors were able to defend almost to the final buzzer. But only almost. 26 seconds before the end of regulation time, Canadian Josh Morrissey equalized for the Jets. In overtime, his compatriot Mark Scheifele made the difference after 93 seconds.
With goal number 32, the team's top scorer this season made the Jets number 1 in the league again. They are one point ahead of the Washington Capitals with one more game to play. Niederreiter was not involved in either of the two successful goals. Winnipeg have now won ten games in a row, extending their own record of eight wins.
