Shooter Nina Christen and mountain biker Nino Schurter will carry the Swiss flag at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris on Friday evening.
Swiss Chef de Mission Ralph Stöckli had no surprises in store on Thursday. 38-year-old Nino Schurter from Graubünden has already won a full set of medals at the Olympics, including gold in Rio in 2016. The 30-year-old Nina Christen from Nidwalden won gold and bronze in Tokyo three years ago.
Schurter is the second mountain biker to carry the Swiss flag after Thomas Frischknecht in Sydney in 2000. There was also one shooter before, August Hollenstein in Rome in 1960.
The opening ceremony on Friday evening in Paris will be a premiere. For the first time, it will not take place in a stadium, but on a river. From 7.30 p.m., the athletes will sail a 6 km route on the Seine in 160 boats. This will allow several hundred thousand spectators to be there live.
However, this will also require a gigantic safety plan, with large-scale closures and traffic restrictions.
