
The Swiss epee fencers failed to reach the quarter-finals of the team competition at the European Championships in Genoa and thus missed out on a medal.
Ian Hauri, Lucas Malcotti and Alexis Bayard were narrowly defeated 37:40 by Italy, the hosts and runners-up at last year's European Championships in Basel.
Switzerland led by four points after the first six of nine matches. However, the last three duels then went to the Italians, including the final between Hauri and Andrea Santarelli, who won European bronze in the singles in Basel and Genoa respectively.
The Swiss delegation has its last chance of winning a medal on Thursday in the women's epee fencing team competition with Pauline Brunner and the sisters Angeline and Aurore Favre.
