The Swiss athletes missed out on the podium on the first day of ski cross racing in Val di Fassa. Gil Martin and Saskja Lack both finished in 6th place.
In the men's race, Alex Fiva had to settle for 8th place one day after his 40th birthday. This meant he also lagged behind his team-mate Gil Martin, who achieved his second-best World Cup result with 6th place. Tobias Baur, who was registered for the race and has been the best Swiss racer so far this season, decided not to take part due to health reasons.
Meanwhile, there were three German racers on the podium: Florian Wilmsmann won ahead of Cornel Renn and Tim Hronek.
In the women's event, Saskja Lack was the only Swiss woman to reach the semi-finals. The 25-year-old finished sixth, placing in the top 6 for the fourth time this winter, although the Olympic skier from Winterthur is still missing out on a podium finish. Victory went to the Italian Jole Galli, who celebrated her third World Cup victory - her second in Val di Fassa.
A second competition will take place on Saturday in the village in the Dolomites.
